Learn Coding with Arcade Game Development

Junior Engineers' Arcade Game Development course is an interactive and fun introduction to programming computer games using a MiniTendo device. The Minitendo device by PyBadge is a simple, hand-held computer that is specifically designed to help kids make and play their own games.

Our program teaches fundamental block coding concepts and basic game development before moving onto more complicated games, building on coding and gaming techniques over the course of the program.

What is a Arcade Game Development?

Minitendo by PyBadge is a credit-card sized mini computer which mimics a handheld gaming device. It introduces students to how software and hardware work together. It has a screen, buttons, built-in sensors and many input/output features that students use to program games and play them using the device.

Minitendos are simple to use and allow students to jump right into hands-on coding. Coding that the students write using MakeCode Arcade on their computers is integrated with the Minitendo hardware to create diverse and fun gaming projects. It’s really simple to get started and a super fun, tangible way to start a child’s coding journey, and teach students to experiment and try new projects with confidence.

What will your child learn?

Arcade Game Development is a great first coding class. It’s interactive and hands-on, meaning kids are engaged right from the start of the class. It also teaches core concepts including  coding, game design, and the integration of  software and hardware.

Students will be introduced to the MakeCode Arcade platform, which is a code editing platform. It allows students to write code that is then downloaded onto their Minitendo device. Junior Engineers Arcade Game Development program will teach students how to code their MiniTendo device to complete a series of games and interactive projects like interactive nametags, Dance Party, Space Destroyer, and Maze games.

Students learn a range of core skills in Junior Engineers’ Arcade Game Development program. It helps students to make the link between the creation of the code and the act of programming the hardware to respond to the instructions they are creating. Concepts covered include inputs and outputs, as well as the fundamental block coding concepts of Sequences, Loops, IF statements, Variables and Loops
